Call for CODA 2012 Conducting Masterclass Students

The College Orchestra Directors Association (CODA) Announces:

A Nationwide Call for Conducting Student Participants

CODA National Conference in Chicago, Illinois

Saturday, January 28, 2012

Conducting Masterclass with Maestro Victor Yampolsky,

Carol F. and Arthur L. Rice Jr. University Professorship

in Performance, Conducting

Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University

• 4 – 6 participants will be chosen nationwide

• Full time undergraduate or graduate students welcome to apply

• Up to $400 in travel expense reimbursement available to conductors chosen to participate

• Participants will receive 15 minutes or more of live podium time with full orchestra

• Participants will receive video recordings of their masterclass appearance

• Participants will be provided a free ticket to the Chicago Symphony Performance of

Carmina Burana conducted by Maestro Riccardo Muti

• Participants will be receive a free ticket to attend the post CSO performance reception

(may include a brief appearance by maestro Muti)

• Participants will be offered a 1 year complimentary membership in CODA

•  All materials must be received via email by November 28, 2011

•  All applications must include:

1) completed application form (a link to the form will be provided shortly)

2) 10-15 minute video excerpt of your conducting work with a live ensemble

[see Video  Submission Information below]

Video Submission information:

-       All applicants must provide 10 – 15 minutes of video demonstrating their conducting work before a live ensemble (chamber group or orchestra)

-       The camera should be facing the conductor’s face

-       Two different styles of music are suggested, if possible

-       Videos must be uploaded to YouTube and the link sent in your email application OR you

-       may request a special upload link be sent to you by emailing your request to: aholland@nycap.rr.com

- (DVD’s are not being accepted for this application)

- Videos must be in one of the following four compressed formats:

1) Quicktime (.mov file extension)

2) WMV (.wmv file extension)

3) Mpeg-4 (.mp4 file extension)

4) Flash (.flv file extension)

• Repertoire for the Masterclass will be selected from the following works:

-       Mozart: Don Giovanni Overture (Andre ending)

-       Dvorak: Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Movements 1, 2, 4

Maestro Victor Yampolsky

Maestro Yampolsky

Director of orchestras at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.  In addition to his Northwestern duties, Victor Yampolsky also serves as music director of the Peninsula Music Festival, honorary director of the Scotia Festival of Music, and music director Emeritus and Principal Guest Conductor of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra. He was formerly assistant concertmaster and assistant conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, and principal second violin of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  Yampolsky has appeared as a guest conductor throughout the United States and abroad, and has recorded for the Pyramid and Kiwi-Pacific labels. He received the degree Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Nebraska at Omaha as well as an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, and is a member of the Continuum Committee of the League of American Orchestras.
